Dan McClanahan, M.Photog.M.Artist.Cr.

Hi, I’m Dan McClanahan, and I believe portraits should be felt as much as they’re seen.

I founded McClanahan Studio in Ames, Iowa, with the goal of capturing people according to their vitality. Over the past 15+ years, that mission has evolved into a passion for crafting portraits that honor truth, celebrate individuality, and push creative boundaries. I see every shoot as an opportunity to co-create something meaningful—using light, interaction, and imagination to tell your story with intention.

I’m honored that this approach has led to some unexpected milestones: representing the U.S. on Team USA for the World Photographic Cup (four times), earning three degrees offered by the Professional Photographers of America (Master of Photography, Master Artist, and Master Craftsman), and receiving multiple Grand Imaging Awards. But the real reward? Helping people feel seen, celebrated, and proud of who they are.

Outside the studio, you’ll find me having adventures with my family, drumming, sipping espresso, or teaching at photography conferences across the country. My process is always evolving, but the goal remains the same: to bring out your inner awesome.
