Description

Most portrait photographers are technically competent. Few are visually distinctive. This class bridges that gap by drawing on the aesthetic principles of both fine art and fashion photography — two disciplines that, when combined, produce portraits that are immediately recognisable and consistently award-winning. Built around four pillars — Foundations, Structure, Mood, and Expression — this session goes beyond technique to teach photographers how to think conceptually about every element of an image before the shutter is pressed. You will learn how fine art and fashion approach posing and composition differently, how colour theory and lighting patterns create mood with intention, and how to direct genuine expression that elevates a portrait from competent to iconic. Sarah draws on her own award-winning portfolio throughout, dissecting real images to show how each pillar works in practice. Attendees leave with a repeatable creative framework they can apply immediately in their studio — and a new visual language for building portraits that stand apart in competition, on social media, and in print.
