Bio
Sophia Barrett is the owner and creative director of Sophia Barrett Studios, a Black-owned boutique portrait studio based in Atlanta, Georgia. With over 15 years in business, Sophia has built a brand recognized for its fine art approach, intentional storytelling, and commitment to creating imagery that celebrates the strength, beauty, vulnerability, and complexity of women—particularly women of color.
Obsessed with art in all its forms, Sophia’s creativity extends far beyond photography. From painting and woodworking to sewing, interior design, fashion, and set creation, she is constantly studying how different artistic disciplines influence the way we see and create. A graduate of Suffolk University’s New England School of Design with a degree in Interior Design, Sophia brings both an artist’s curiosity and a designer’s understanding of composition, structure, texture, color, and space to her photography.
Rather than viewing photography as an isolated medium, Sophia approaches it as a culmination of many art forms. Her sets often incorporate handmade and thoughtfully sourced elements, allowing the environment, wardrobe, lighting, posing, and subject to work together to tell a cohesive visual story. Her Caribbean heritage, love of fantasy literature, fascination with art history, and commitment to meaningful client connection continue to shape her evolving artistic voice.
Sophia’s photography journey began after she was gifted her first DSLR camera. What started as a creative outlet soon developed into a business. After years of photographing weddings, she transitioned her focus to portraiture in 2015 and began developing the fine art aesthetic for which Sophia Barrett Studios has become known.
Today, Sophia leads Sophia Barrett Studios as its owner and creative director, continuing to evolve both her artistry and the business behind it. Beyond creating commissioned portraiture, she shares her knowledge through workshops, photography conferences, educational experiences, and creative events. As an educator, Sophia encourages photographers to look beyond photography itself—to study art, develop visual literacy, experiment with other creative disciplines, and understand why an image works rather than simply learning how to recreate it.
For Sophia, photography is ultimately about legacy. Her goal is to create work that is not only beautiful in the present, but meaningful decades from now—artwork that preserves something honest about the people she photographs and gives future generations a tangible connection to their stories.
